We are pleased to share the opening of The Ormsson collection, a solo exhibition by João Penalva at Culturgest, Porto.
Having begun his artistic career in dance and after several years devoted to painting, João Penalva began to develop a new body of work, in the mid-1990s, in which documentation, reality and fiction come together in large-scale installations. In 1997, he presented The Ormsson Collection at the Pavilhão Branco of the City Museum in Lisbon, bringing together works, objects and artefacts from different periods belonging to the Icelandic collector Loftur Ormsson. Almost thirty years later, the exhibition was reassembled at the same venue, alongside Characters and Players, at Culturgest in Lisbon, that brought together a large selection of his installations. Now, The Ormsson Collection is being shown for the first time in Porto, extending the celebrations of João Penalva’s fifty years as a visual artist to the north of the country, ahead of the presentation in November of Characters and Players on display at the Oliva Art Centre in São João da Madeira, as part of the RPAC program.
Opening 23 October,The Ormsson collection will be on view until 10 January 2027.
