We are pleased to share the opening of INDUSTRIAL: Silk Roads 3000, a group exhibition including Ali Kazma's Subterranean at Kunsthalle Dortmund.
Curated by Inke Arns and Thibaut de Ruyter, the exhibition focuses on logistics, supply chains and global commodity flows. The starting point is the so-called ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, an intercontinental infrastructure project that China has been rolling out worldwide since 2013. It is also known as the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative or the ‘New Silk Road’. Duisburg and the Ruhr region are located at one end of it.
In “Subterranean”, Kazma shows the assembly of a gas pipeline of the kind they are building so many of nowadays: an energy communications link. We see a man, a foreman, checking the quality of the welding inside the tubes. These also make very abstract compositions, with the emphasis on the lines of welding, the milling of the pipes, made smoother so that the energy inside can flow through more smoothly.
Opening 12 September 2026, INDUSTRIAL: Silk Roads 3000 will be on view until 10 January 2027.
