"Wolfgang Borchert was 18 when the war broke out and 24 when it ended. The war and imprisonment had transformed his health, hunger and misery did the rest, and Borchert succumbed on November 20, 1944, at the age of 26." It can seem strange to the reader that a critical review of an art exhibition begins with a long quotation. In this case, from the German writer Heinrich Böll (1917-1985), taken from his preface to the Portuguese edition of Em Frente da Porta do Lado de Fora (ed. Portugália) by Wolfgang Borchert.
