Malta Biennale

Vasco Araújo

Vasco Araújo is participating in the 2026 edition of the Malta Biennale with his most recent work Carne Vale.

Commissioned by the Biennale, this work offers a critical reinterpretation of the history of Maltese Carnival, exploring its religious origins, social implications, and moments of political rupture.

The title, derived from the Italian expression meaning “meat is allowed”, evokes the spirit of transgression and freedom that characterises the period immediately preceding Lent — a time (40 days before Easter) when moral codes and dietary restrictions of the Catholic tradition are temporarily suspended.

Opening March 10 at the Sacra Infermeria, Mediterranean Conference Centre, in Valletta, the exhibition curated by Rosa Martínez will run from March 11 to May 29, 2026 under the theme CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT, aiming to challenge environmental, aesthetic, and ethical issues through art.
